Learner insurance terms explained
Use these definitions to read product pages and policy documents more carefully. A definition does not confirm how a particular policy works.
Annual policy
Cover written for a year. Paying monthly can be a credit arrangement rather than month-by-month insurance.
Broker
A firm that helps arrange insurance with an insurer. Its role and permissions should be checked independently.
Excess
The amount the policyholder may have to contribute to a claim, subject to the policy terms.
Named driver
A person listed as permitted to drive under another person’s policy; this is different from holding a separate learner policy.
No-claims discount
A renewal discount linked to claims history. Its treatment after a claim depends on the policy and any protection.
Policy wording
The detailed contractual terms, definitions, exclusions and conditions. A marketing page is not a substitute.
Provisional licence
The licence status used while learning. Insurance must also be valid for the learner, vehicle and use.
Temporary cover
A policy for a stated short period. Start and end times, extensions and pass-test treatment vary.
Underwriting insurer
The insurer that carries the insurance risk. It may differ from the brand, broker or distributor seen first.
